Cationary: Meaningful Portraits of Cats
Published in Hardcover by Penguin Studio (28 March, 2002)
Author: Sharon Montrose
Average review score:

Cat Lovers Delight
"Cationary" is beautiful, amusing, knowing - just like the photographer's "Dogtionary." Sharon Montrose really has done it again. You know the old saying, "Dogs have masters; cats have staff." Indeed. Cats are vain; they're haughty; they don't suffer fools at all, let alone gladly. Then turn around, and they're loving, and graceful, and endlessly inventive. They're all here in this delightful book, in all their warm, exasperating, funny, fussy, glamorous glory.

What a HAPPY, LITTLE BOOK!
I have to repeat it, WHAT A HAPPY LITTLE BOOK! Being in the animal care field (I work at a non-profit, privately funded shelter) not only do I collect books on animals, of course, I see a lot of sad situations everyday in my field. When this book arrived from Amazon (prompt as usual), after a hard day at the shelter, I was immediately overjoyed by the beauty of it and it helped me realize "Yes, this is why I do what I do, because people care"! The photography is excellent, sort of a photojournalistic point of view and the style of printing is in a soft, sepia tone. The captions for each photograph are right on target. Now to order her book on dogs....

Beautiful Book
All I could think about while I was looking through this beautiful book was how much I wished I could contract Ms. Montrose to take portraits of my cats. How thrilled the guardians of these cats must feel to have these gorgeous portraits of their cat companions.

I work for a publishing company so the typesetting did not escape my notice, either. Called "CatLover" it was designed by the author as per the cip page, and is so hip and quirky and appropriate. Impressive.

The format of the book is a photograph or photographs of a cat, it's name which falls into alphabetical order like Webster's on a much smaller scale, and then captioned by three definitions of the accompanied cat. My favorite is Gracie because that is the name of one of my own cat companions.

When you buy this book, get two. One for yourself and one for another cat lover in your life.

A Textbook of Modern Spanish, As Now Written and Spoken in Castile and the Spanish American Republics
Published in Hardcover by International Thomson Publishing (June, 1956)
Author: Marathon Montrose Ramsey
Average review score:

The Most Comprehensive Reference on the Spanish Language
You'll Ever Find... as well as a good read--I can't believe it's out of print! Probably most appealing to grammarians, however. The format invites you to envelop yourself in this beautiful language and its proper usage. Each teaching point is illustrated with phrases in English translated to Spanish or quotes from Spanish literature translated to English. I can't say enough about the timeless quality of this detailed reference. I've never come across a textbook that's such a pleasure to read.

Mandatory for serious Spanish study
Ramsey is the quinessential reference for anyone who is serious about learning Spanish accurately and correctly. This marvellous book has been integral in my personal library since 1960. I used it as a student, as a professor of Spanish and as a researcher. My original copy is now being used by a grandson in the wilds of Nebraska; hence, the need for an additional copy.
If there were more stars to give this review, I'd mark them down. Ramsey does not just provide the standard explanations, he gives the history and the technical aspects of the language. The book's arrangement makes research very easy and comprehensive.

A Must-have for Any Serious Student of Spanish
I've used this reference text since I started learning Spanish ten years ago, and it never fails me. It is best suited to those interested in grammatical mastery of the language, but is useful to any first-year student. It is well organized and easy to read. First published in 1894 and last updated in 1956, the book is entirely relevant to Spanish today. Its useful forays into etymology and grammatical history will leave you with a lasting understanding and memory of essential elements of the language. The book has been praised by educators and students for over a century. As the most recent reviser, Robert Spaulding, says in his introduction, "Down through the years Spanish teachers continue to refer to Ramsey as 'the ultimate and best accessible authority.'" It is my favorite Spanish reference book.

The Golden Heiress

A great action-adventure-romance!
If you can find this book, get it! The characters are unforgettable; the plot is a fun whirlwind of activity. Sure, the book stretches all plausibility, but it does it in such a delightful way that I didn't care. By the end, you may have figured out the mystery before the rest of the characters, but you won't care because you won't be disappointed.

Montrose

An enthralling piece of historical biography
This well-written book documents the life of James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, in the 1600's. It is indeed a page-turner: the crisp writing is full of factual references but never burdened by them, like the photos, period paintings and documents illustrating the book, they enhance and support the narrative. It is free of ornamental flourishes or fawning, relying only on exposition of facts and quality writing.

Rarely do I agree with the marketing hype that usually makes up the front flap of a books dustjacket, but in this case, I agree wholeheartedly:
"This remarkable story of a great romantic hero separates the facts from legend and yet still manages to capture brilliantly all the excitement of the tale, of gallantry and heroism, of conspiracy and intrigue, of massacres and tragedy, set against the magnificent scenery of seventeenth-century Scotland."

At least as thrilling as the story of William Wallace (alongside whom one of Graham's ancestors had fought two centuries earlier), this book is a very exhilarating tale of a remarkable person.

The Montrose Omnibus: The Young Montrose and Montrose: The Captain General
Published in Paperback by Hodder & Stoughton (June, 1997)
Author: Nigel Tranter
Average review score:

One man's struggles to win a kingdom for his king.
Montrose was a patriot who sacrificed his family, his wealth, his land, and ultimately, his life in the service of his king. As commander of the royalist forces, Montrose and his small band of followers won a series of battles against the larger, better equipped Convanant forces. Tranter carefully describes the battle sites and tactics, bringing Montrose to life as a brilliant tactian. Stubbornly maintaining his loyalty to a king that didn't deserve it, Montrose is a tragic, yet admired figure in the history of Scotland.

Dogtionary
After giving a few copies of Dogtionary as Christmas gifts, I am ordering a few more because the book was such a big hit with my friends. These dog portraits are beautiful and yet so simple. Any dog owner who has struggled to get a good picture of their pet can take inspiration from this book. Sharon Montrose clearly knows and loves her subjects well.

A Best Buy For Dog Lovers
This is the sweetest book I've ever bought. When I picked up this book in the bookstore I sat on the floor in the middle of the aisle and just started glowing as I went through the whole book page by page- It truly captures our sweet canine companions at their best. The photos are amazing and the sayings fit perfectly. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a love for dogs. It will brighten your day and make you laugh out loud. It captures our animals true spirits.

A Rare Beauty
A Dog Walker/Trainer with a lifetime love for photography, this is my favorite kind of book. For sure. I've picked up many, but Sharon Montrose is my favorite. Every photo is so beautiful and I just LOVE how she captures the personality of her furry subjects. That's the true talent in my eyes. Of all of versions of this kind of work I have perused, this is my favorite one. Lightweights (Sharon Montrose) is a close second.

I also am aslo a fan of "If only you knew how much I smell you." (Photos - Valerie Shaff/Text - Roy Blount Jr.)

Pugs in Public

Authors: Kendall Farr, George Bennett, Sarah Montague, and Sharon Montrose
Average review score:

Amazing-one of the best pug books around.
I found this book so amazing. I don't have a pug but I want one so much. I read so many pug books. This is very unique. I love it. If you love pugs or dogs this is a must. It was great, funny, informative, and so much more. I want a sequal or something!

Posh Pugs!
Nice book about and for people who pamper their Pugs. Not intended to be a "useful training tool" (I don't know where the reviewer below got the impression that it was supposed to be..!) but just a cute fluffy book about a select group of upscale NYC pugs and their eccentric owners. Photos and more info of "Pug Hill" in Central Park would have been nice (but perhaps too common?). Makes a good mini-coffee table book or x-mas gift for your uppity Pug pals.

Entertaining and full of heart!
This is the perfect gift for a Pug owner! If you love dogs, especially Pugs, this is your book. Darling bios on pugs and their owners. Should be titled "Pugs in the City". This is an homage to the breed not a training book or breed standard information. This is pug entertainment.

Lightweights

TEENEY TOME, TEENEY DOGS, BIG HEART AND SOUL
The title is all wrong: Yes, these pooches are lightweights (in the sense that they weigh so very little), but canine conisueers will find Sharon Montrose's photos weighing in with lots
of cute, captivating charm. This slim volume features color and sepia-toned portraits of puppies snapped during the first weeks of their lives ...most keeping company with vintage or antique scales ... and all of them are simply the cat's meow! There's Lola, an 8 week-old tea cup Chihuahua, weighing in at 14 ounces. There' Scooter and Lily, a 22-pound, 6-ounce snoozing Weimaraner combo whose faces might possibly send William Wegman heading for a phone book. And there's Lurch, a 14-pound, 8-ounce brindle Dane, who, even at 8 weeks, promises to grow (and quickly) into a precious gentle giant. Montrose is not only gifted behind the lens, but in front as well, since she has managed to capture the spirits and spunk of each pampered pooch.

love it
Cute...adorable...creative...fun! Love this book...you will too:)

BEST DOG BOOK EVER!!
I was already a fan of Montrose's work (Dogtionary and Cationary), but she really tipped the scales with LIGHTWEIGHTS! This is the most adorable dog book I have EVER seen--I know, I have them all. The dogs are cute--puppies actually--and the colors and scales too sweet for words. Run, don't walk, to buy this book!!

Heart-Shaped Box: A Claire Montrose Mystery
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (23 January, 2001)
Author: April Henry
Average review score:

School Reunion Gone Wrong
The school reunion might have gone wrong for Claire, but it sure was a treat to this reader. The mystery was excellent. I loved the way she went back and forth with tidbits on each graduate. Its just the way we do with our annual and old pictures. It was so real with wondering if you are too fat-too thin--or too wrinkled to go to the 20th. Great book.

Just Like Nancy Drew
[...]Claire Montrose is just an average woman like you and me who happens to stumble upon a mystery and decides to investigate. She is not a cop, no police training, etc. This particular mystery takes place at her high school reunion, which was fun as well reading about seeing everyone again and how their personalities from high school now mesh with what they have become. I am having my 15 year reunion soon so this was particularly fun for me. I love that the book was so fast paced. Right from the beginning you enter the story without a lot of unnecessary reading. It engrossed me and kept me enthralled and there were some very funny parts as well. If she writes more books like this I will buy them and I am now looking for others as well. (But please, Ms. Henry, save the single parents!) Now if we can just get an adult version of the Nancy Drew books!

Clever addition to the Claire Montrose series
Class of '79. The cheerleader, the wannabe, the brainiac, the murderer. Murderer? In this third installment of April Henry's Claire Montrose series, Claire and her dashing boyfriend, Dante, embark on a weekend trip to Claire's 20 year high-school class reunion. Upon arriving, Claire is flattered to receive a handcrafted heart-shaped box lined with her old yearbook photo from an anonymous admirer--well, flattered until popular ex-cheerleader Cindy Sanchez is found lying dead in the parking lot with a similar heart-shaped box in her hand.

Ms. Henry expertly guides us through clever twists and turns as Claire's lingering adolescent insecurities give way to an emerging self-confidence and savvy which just may keep her alive.

Anyone who has ever pondered attending a school reunion will enjoy this classy mystery lightly seasoned with '70's nostalgia and Ms. Henry's trademark humor.
